Becoming a Security Trainer

To deliver licence-linked security qualifications and protective security qualifications in the UK you must be competent in the sector that you wish to teach in.

Approved trainers/assessors seeking to deliver licence-linked qualifications and above must successfully complete a range of formal qualifications which includes a generic teaching qualification at Level 3 or above, and depending on what courses are being delivered, may also require a conflict management trainers’ qualification and physical intervention trainers’ qualification, in addition you must also hold an assessor unit.

To deliver non-licenced linked qualifications you must be sector competent and hold the correct formal qualifications to deliver in your chosen field.

The Process

Firstly identify your areas of competence and experience. If this is a licence linked qualification you will already hold an SIA licence and have front line experience for the subject and course, you want to deliver. If it is non-licenced link, then you should have verifiable experience in your chosen field.

The next step is to identify the qualifications you want to deliver, this will signpost you to the formal qualifications you require. Once qualified you will need to register with a training centre as a trainer unless you are setting up your own centre, which is something that HZL can support you with.

Example 1: I want to deliver the Level 3 Certificate for Close Protection Operatives in the Private Security Industry (RQF)

This is a licenced linked qualification and along with sector competence the following formal qualifications are required to deliver the course:

  • Level 3 Award in Education and Training (RQF) or similar
  • Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment (RQF) or similar
  • Level 3 Award in the Delivery of Conflict Management Training (RQF)
  • Level 3 Award for Physical Intervention Trainers in the Private Security Industry (RFQ)
  • Level 3 Award for Deliverers of Physical Intervention Training for Close Protection Operatives (RQF).

Example 2: I want to deliver the Level 2 Award for CCTV Operators (Public Space Surveillance) in the Private Security Industry (RQF)

This is a licenced linked qualification and along with sector competence the following formal qualifications are required to deliver the course:

  • Level 3 Award in Education and Training (RQF) or similar
  • Level 3 Award in Assessing Competence in the Work Environment (RQF) or similar.

Example 3: I want to deliver the Level 3 Award in Security Management (RQF)

This is not a licensed linked qualification. The qualification requirement to deliver this course would be dictated by the Awarding Organisation (AO) and is available through the course's specifications. We would support you in identifying the qualification requirements to deliver this course.
